In 1937, Napoleon Hill published Think and Grow Rich, the culmination of his 20 years of research and interviews with the world’s wealthiest people. The book uncovered the secret formula of success used by greats such as Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, Henry Ford, and Thomas Edison. Hill said so himself: “I have never known anyone who was inspired to use the secret who did not achieve noteworthy success in his chosen calling. I have never known any person to distinguish himself, or accumulate riches of any consequence, without possession of the secret.”

The 100% certainty of success of those who used the secret led Hill to the conclusion that the secret formula must be some type of scientific law—a fundamental scientific law which always works—no different in certainty of operation than the law of gravity. “Through some strange and powerful principle of ‘mental chemistry’ which she has never divulged,” said Hill, “nature wraps up in the impulse of desire ‘that something’ which recognizes no such word as impossible, and accepts no such reality as failure.”

Being a journalist, and not a scientist or engineer, Hill was able to accurately report the validity of his findings—the secret formula for personal achievement that always worked. But he also admitted that he wasn’t quite sure how this secret formula worked: “Back of this formula is a law of nature which no man has yet been able to explain.” In other words, the science behind the secret was still a secret…until now.
